The Brewery
The Isle of Skye Brewery was established in April 1995, the first commercial brewery in Skye and the Western Isles.
December 1995 saw Our Products start rolling out the doors of our purpose-built premises at Uig, Isle of Skye.
Initially a part-time operation, production moved to full-time in October 1998 when Angus MacRuary, one of the original founders, gave up his job as head of business education at Portree High School to concentrate on running the business. Brewing duties are undertaken by Angus`s wife Pam (at the time Scotland`s only female brewer) and Norrie MacLeod, (both ex-chefs). Jonathan Jones (JJ) Pam and Angus`s nephew is the latest addition to the brewing team.
Our Beers are sent Out and About around Skye, Scotland and the UK. The United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, France and Switzerland have all been helping to expand our overseas markets.
Buth an Leanna (The Brewery Shop) has been established online, selling a wide range of branded items and beers, and on the premises retailing brewery souvenirs and Skye, and other Scottish bottled beers, and country wines. Our premises shop is open Easter until mid-October to visitors.
The attention to detail given to all aspects of production, distribution and customer care has been recognised in several awards at beer festivals and elsewhere throughout the UK, some of which are on show in the Trophy Room.
We recommend you take a little time and have a good look Around Here for information about Uig and the Isle of Skye . Then, if you look Over There, you`ll find a variety of `off island` businesses and associations, all very supportive of our endeavours, that have swapped links with us.
TOURS
We have offered tours in the past but, regrettably, are no longer able to do so. Although we have a small shop on-site, we have no visitor centre or guides. We are very busy at most times of the year and to provide tours we would have to take a member of staff off production duties. There are also health and safety issues in small busy premises like ours. We apologise to all and hope that, in the future, when we can open a small visitor centre we will be able to offer tours.
WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR "CUILLIN BEAST" WON THE CAMRA CHAMPION BEER OF SCOTLAND 2011 COMPETITION AT THE SCOTTISH REAL ALE FESTIVAL IN EDINBURGH.
IT HAS NOW GONE ON TO TAKE THE BRONZE MEDAL FOR BARLEY WINES AT THE BRITISH WINTER ALES FESTIVAL IN MANCHESTER.
